UAS and 4K Photography

The unmanned aircraft system (UAS) photography and videography industry is growing quickly and is expected to exceed $4.9 billion by 2024 according to Nasdaq global news. The ability of UAS to capture angles that traditional handheld cameras cannot is a great asset to photographers and filmmakers. However, one does not have to be a Hollywood producer to capture lifelike images from a flying aircraft. UAS are now being equipped with high definition cameras to see the world from a bird’s eye view for both commercial users and hobbyists.

Camera technology is advancing beyond 1080p, which until recently was the highest quality generally available for imaging. 4k TV exceeds 1080p in every aspect according to rtings.com, offering 4 times as many pixels thus allowing for brighter, more vibrant colors. Despite the huge increase in pixels there are some limitations to the new technology. In order to display images in 4k quality, both the camera used to capture images and the screen used to display images must have 4k capability.

The advantages of the 4k camera include its ability to capture 1000 frames per second at an increased pixel count, making it a powerful tool for large scale cinematography. At this time, the cost of 4k cameras and screens prevent the everyday hobbyist and basic commercial users from implementing it on a large scale. Unless you’re looking to get into closed set filmmaking, 4k is likely not a viable option at this time.

Like all technology the cost of 4k cameras and televisions will fall as mass production provides economies of scale, making them similar to 1080p components widely used today. Until then 1080p will remain the best option for most commercial users and hobbyists.
